AGM for Southland Football Men’s Committee
This will be held 7.00 pm Tuesday 22 November 2011
at Southland Football ILT Football Centre Islington Street
Written nominations for Chairperson, Secretary and up to 5 committee members
need to be in to Men’s Secretary by 5.00 pm Friday 11 November 2011.
Hi Stu,
I was wondering if you could put a notice up on
your website on behalf of my Son Mackenzie
Smith.
He left his car at Old Boys last Saturday to go
the Phoenix game, and his car window was smashed
and broken into.
He has had all his training gear two pairs of
expensive boots, I pod, camera a couple of
sports bags.
One pair of the boots are personalized with
“MS7” on them
black Adipure with orange stripes
and MS7 is also orange, so they would be easily
noticed if some clown decides to play in them!
If you could put something on the website and
bring it to other peoples attention we would
greatly appreciate it.
Regards
Martin
Important Notice to all football members
It is very disappointing to
see the attitude shown by some people in caring
for the new facilities we have established at
the ILT Football Centre.
Every week people are seen taking glassware
(bottles) onto the turf area, smoking in the
turf area (with some even stamping out their
cigarette butts on the turf itself!!) and taking
dogs into the turf area.
These people have no regard at all for the time
and effort put in by many people in establishing
these fantastic facilities.
The most
disappointing aspect is that they are people
involved in our game.
Whether you agree or
disagree with these rules is irrelevant, they
are the rules.
Southland Football does not want to have to
start banning people to get the message across,
but will if needed.
We ask all clubs to ensure that every member is
aware of the rules displayed on the signs as you
enter the turf.

Thank you,
Ken Cresswell

Stu,
Our boy, Thomas, got a once in a lifetime game
on Saturday.
Our U 15 Division 1 boys got to have a
friendly (fairly competitive) game against the
Australian Women's (The Matildas) team.
The Australian Coaches asked me to referee the
game.
This was the girls last training run before they
head off to Germany for the Women's World Cup.
They are ranked number 11 in the world.
Our boys battled hard (they had played a hard
game the night before) before going down 9-0.
I've attached a group photo and a shot of Thomas
in action.

Thanks, James Robertson

SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL'S PERSON OF THE YEAR (2010) & DECADE:
|
![]() |
Ex
Pat and Swearing On The Football Field:
Stu,
Here on the Gold coast, foul language was a big
thing.
Two years ago, foul language, out loud or
towards the officials, was punished with a
straight red card.
Needless to say there were quite a few red cards
dished out
(with up to 6-8 weeks suspensions for abusing
officials).
Fast forward a couple of years and now the foul
language is at a minimum.
It hasn't taken players long to control their
language (otherwise they are in for a very short
season).
========================================
On a personal note my youngest boy, Thomas, is
now playing in the local Under 15 Division 1
competition
(with me as Manager).
They have just finished their first 5 grading
games on top of the league.
Their main competition starts after Easter
(where they are one of the favourites to win the
league).
Once they turn 15 the boys are eligible to enter
the Men's Senior Competitions.
My oldest, Michael, still plays in the Men's
Youth League (Under 19s)
I still play in our Men's 4th division (we have
won that league for the past three seasons)

Thanks James, I'd like to think that offenders
will comply and help solve the problem down
here.
However I know from past feedback from some
Northern scribe colleagues here in NZ
that what you say is an effective measure...Stu
Sponsorship & Funding
With the season well under way it's timely to remind you all
of the importance of sponsorship and funding.
Any money is good money in the current Global Market and we should all,
whenever possible, support our football sponsors and funders.
In my case I have had valued and continuing support for this site
from both
SOUTHLAND GLASS Ltd
and
JESCO HYDRAULICS.
Our major funders are continuing with their support based on
Southland Football Inc's sound business and organisational practices.
And in 2010 Southland Football received generous funding from SBS|Bank
to help support & improve Junior Football.
I will acknowledge team naming right sponsors
in the "NEW" marquee field on front page of the site,
and will continue using team naming right sponsors in the STL reviews & results.
It's up to you all to please keep me informed of any changes....amen

Phil Earns His Level 2 Refs Badge.....Well Done
This year has
been a record one for the award of New Zealand Level 2 Referee Badges.
There has been a total of 6 such badges awarded this year, which has never
happened in over 100 years of refereeing in this area.
The first referee from the Footballsouth area to obtain a New Zealand was Mr
R.Brown in Dunedin in 1921 with badge number 41.
The highest number of badges awarded in any one year were in 1989 (5) and 1990
(5)
It has finally happened - 2010 is the year in which we set a new benchmark with
6 badges awarded.
The latest recipient is Phillip Bulling who has just been
awarded badge number 2210.

Phillip has been tireless in recruitment in Southland, helping out with course
presentations and working the phones.
In August this year, after successfully completing field tests in Dunedin,
Phillip attended the national Stage 2 Referee Development Academy in Napier run
in conjunction with the premier secondary school competition.
After very good performances in the middle in five games (including St Andrews v
Hutt College, Hamilton Boys v Middleton, and Rangitoto v Kings College) Phillip
impressed national assessors over a intense week long course with his vastly
improved decision making, growing confidence, fair handling of players, and
enthusiasm.
And, for Southlanders it is an even more special occasion with two national
refereeing badges awarded this year.
Earlier in the season Dean Seager was awarded his badge number 2202,

this was
the first badge awarded in Southland since 2000 when Alex Wilson achieved the
honour.
Congratulations to Phillip and Dean, and for the record, all who achieved their national
refereeing badges in 2010 were:
Kenny Evans (2184) - Dunedin
Gary McNicol (2186) - Temuka
Peter Faithful (2191) - Dunedin
Dean Seager (2202) - Riverton
Jack Cowie (2209) - Dunedin
Phillip Bulling (2210) - Invercargill

Rubbish Rears Its Head Again
(Slightly modified to include all grounds...Stu)
In recent weeks we have noticed an increase in rubbish left
on football grounds (inc' Turnbull Thompson) after games,
noticeably bottles, bottle caps/tops and masking tape.
Some people are great and do clean up after themselves, and some do not.
Please ask/remind all your members/supporters to keep this area clean as
Turnbull Thomson in particular
is a fantastic facility and we want to keep it that way.
Your support with this would be appreciated.

To all clubs - Team Cards
Firstly, I would like to commend everyone for getting the
Team Cards in on time for the first two rounds of this season.
Unfortunately, last week wasn’t as good as there are some that are still missing
today (Fri 14th).
Remember that your team could lose points if cards are not in on time so please
try to get them in
before 5pm the Wednesday after the match.
An alternative, for those that have the technology, is to
scan the team card (both sides) and email the scanned copy to me each week.
You do not need to send in the actual Team Card,
providing the information is readable on the scanned copy we are happy to
accept this.
Also, I would like to remind everyone that the Team Cards
must be completed fully and given to the match official prior to the game.
Team cards must include surnames, first names or initial and the shirt number
plus match details on the other side.
The card must then be signed by the team captain or club official and the
referee after the match.
The most important aspect is that all this information must be legible so that
we can read it when it handed in.
Please pass this information onto all your team
coaches/captains so that they are aware of their responsibilities.
Ken

Secrets Of A Fixture Computer...
The above link is a great read for those among you who
are driven to distraction, sometimes baldness,
when doing Fixture Lists for your competitions.
Is it really so hard now ?
Opportunity lost...or is it ?
Due to the current adverse weather, training sessions and games are being cancelled and people are seeing this as an opportunity lost. However, where one door closes another one opens. Why not look at it from a positive side? You might want to consider using that time in a different way.
Instead of just looking to develop the football player, have a think about the other components of a being good football player. Those coaches that recently attended a Level 1 Youth course know what I am talking about (mental, physical and social). You could use the time to organize one of the following:
·
A strength session in the changing rooms or club
rooms.
·
A team bonding session.
·
A classroom session around a particular topic you have
been working on at the training ground.
·
A video session. Looking at tapes/DVDs of games or
training sessions and have some discussion around it.
·
A classroom session about the Code of Conduct at your
club.
·
A quiz about the laws of the game.
·
A classroom session to find out what your players
would like to learn more about.
·
A classroom session to set targets (individual, units
and team) for the rest of the season.
·
A fitness session (use the road to go for a run if
still available, as it is free).
·
A classroom session for your players to find out a
little bit more about their coach. For those of you that feel confident you
might ask your players what they expect from you and give them a chance to tell
you what they do and don’t like about the things your currently do with them.
·
A classroom session about nutrition.
·
A classroom session about the effects of alcohol
(depending on age, of course), maybe look at bringing in a local expert.
·
An indoor session around the importance of warm-ups
and cool downs, including going over dynamic and static stretches.
·
A chance to bring in someone else to do the session
(another voice to confirm what you have been telling them).
·
Etc.
To ensure that the above can happen, you need to be organized. Clubs might want to make it part of their club’s culture that coaches have alternative sessions prepared just in case or even set up a folder with these kind of sessions and put them in the clubrooms.
Clubs might want to think about their relationship with local Primary and Secondary schools as they usually have indoor facilities that could be used as alternative venues. In case you do not have such a relationship, you probably will find it hard to get an alternative venue at short notice. This again highlights the importance of relationships between clubs and schools.
Clubs might also want to consider the cancelled game day as an opportunity to get the coaches together and discuss things like future direction of the club, long term player development, funding strategies, coach development, etc.
I hope the above makes sense, but feel free to contact me if you have any queries. I would love to hear from those of you that do the alternative sessions and find out how you got on.
Kind regards,A QPR fanatic can fly the flag....
