Charity Cup: Old Boys 2, Thistle 1; Sept 3rd

First up thanks to the many people seen observing the rules around the Football Turf during the
mid-week semis and Saturday's finals...well done.
The asset must be maintained with care and that relies on people's behaviour.
We are after all our Brothers & Sisters keeper, there's no shame in asking people to comply....
amen

Southend United claimed the Kolk Trophy for the 2011 Women’s Premier League title
with a comprehensive 26-nil thumping of JK Stevenson Queens Park at Bain Park yesterday.

The Sinderellas sponsored Southend women who had a neck and neck struggle with Queenstown Health
Queenstown Rovers throughout the season took over the outright lead on the points table with three games
remaining and staved off those challenges with ease.

It was sweet success too for coach Dave Ridden in only his second season with the team having guided them
to runner up position in his debut season last year.

Southend will also have ownership for the off-season of the Ottley challenge trophy which they currently hold.
Tove Crosswell led the way with 6 goals in yesterday’s game and notably eleven other Southend players registered
goals while Queens Park contributed three own goals.

Note to readers:
If you have a spare hour or two ask Michelle McIntosh if she got a goal then stand back and listen,
you won't get a word in I kid you not...Go Michelle, it really was cracker though...Stu

Queenstown’s Mary Fraser took out the Golden Boot title with 54 goals, ten ahead of Southend’s Tove Crosswell.

Old Boys claimed the final silverware of the Southland senior men’s football season when they edged out Thistle 2-1 in the Charity Cup final played at the ILT Football Centre in Invercargill on Saturday.

Old Boy's Kris Leatherby (red) clambers over Thistle's Marty Black as Karl Hawkes (left) and Craig Sutherland
watch the action.

The trophy won by the AMP South sponsored Old Boys team joins the Waihopai cup for the pre-season competition winners and the Donald Gray memorial cup for the Premier men’s championship title winners in the Waverley Park based clubs trophy cabinet.

In another stellar season, teams from the club also won the Division Two championship, the end of season Edinburgh cup for Division One and Two teams and six of the seven junior championship leagues.

Saturday’s cup final was an evenly contested affair that was clinched for Old Boys by the guile of their Premier league leading striker Brandon deGarnham who netted both their goals.

Brandon de Garnham (red) staves off another effort from Thistle's Stephen Black to shake his hand.

The first came after 5 minutes of play when de Garnham was set free through the midfield and cleverly chipped the ball over Thistle’s advancing keeper Paul Monteith into the net to put Old Boys ahead 1-nil.

Although Paul was up to it here with a fine save as he plucks the ball away from
the head of Old Boys Gordy Lamont.

Strong defensive work from Computer Supplyline Thistle’s experienced pairing of John McCarroll and Stephen Black closed the gateway for Old Boys to attack through the middle again and as a result de Garnham was then kept at bay for long periods of the game.

Thistle's Craig Sutherland (right) also had a hand in thwarting many attacks but in this pic
Old Boy's Scott Kiddey skids on by him.

The score remained at 1-nil through to the half time break but just two minutes into the second half it was tied up at 1-all.

Old Boys failed to clear a corner kick delivered with accuracy from Thistle’s Karl Hawkes and in the ensuing melee the ball was deflected past their keeper Oswaldo Rodriquez by a defender for an own goal to level it up at 1 apiece.

Here's how it happened; somehow the ball got to Old Boys Gordy Lamont (red nearest ball) and "boompha" into
the net it went for Thistle...oh dear...good job the SGHS Snr A girls weren't there to watch Gordy.
Maybe someone will tell them.

Old Boys were forced to play down the flanks in an attempt to regain the lead and threatened many times with pacey runs from regular Spirit FC player Matt Webb down the left side

The athletic and imposing figure of Thistle's Marty Black was enough for Matty (10) to
fire in an off-target cross on this occasion.

however with 10 minutes to go de Garnham met a cross from the right side and rose high to angle a fine header into the net to give his team the lead back at 2-1and claim the trophy.

Thistle's Richie Sutherland plays keep up's to keep Old Boys Aaron Whitaker from
getting the ball...

In the curtain raiser, goals from James Tucker, Reuben Lindsay, Bob Cox and Dave Fosbender secured the Edinburgh trophy final for Walker Murdoch Lawyers Old Boys Division One team 4-1 after the score had been locked at 1-all at half time.

Nic Rodriquez netted the lone goal for his Division Two Cabbage Tree Knox Church team.
