Southland vs Central Otago
HT 1-3, FT 1-3
Goal scorer: Sammy Murrell
A strong start by Southland saw an early reward for our pressure, when Sammy
hooked in a nicely placed left footer to give us the lead.
Central were stung and for the next 20 minutes attacked all out.
A potential offside was let go by the ref and CO were back in the game.
Then a nicely struck left footer from distance got past Terence's best efforts
in goal to put the home team ahead.
Moments later, a goal mouth scramble and attempted clearance was meet by a CO
drive which deflected into goal.
The score line at the half was flattering to CO really, and Southland came out
after the break with renewed self belief, gritty determination and some goals to
achieve.
In what our supporters called "one of best 30 minute periods the team has yet
played", Southland were by far the stronger team.
Everyone worked very hard from GK through to attackers, we competed well for the
ball and got in four times the number of shots towards goal that did CO.
Southland vs Otago
HT 1-1, FT 1-2
Goal scorer: Ramu McCallum
Talk about stepping up! Southland kicked on in spades from their last 40
minutes of the first game, to really put the Otago team on notice, that we have
made strong gains from the last time these teams meet two weeks earlier.
Across the whole squad, this was a fine performance in so many aspects.
We soaked up the early pressure applied by O and then threw it back at them with
interest.
Spurred (I just love that word...Stu) on by a stunning game in goal from
Ethan, our backs met & repelled attacks with composure.
The midfield did not stop battling for possession and looking to run or
distribute the ball at all and our attackers continued to worry the O back-line
and GK with excellent runs and strikes.
Even after a most bizarre and unfortunate goal caught out our Keeper, the team
continued its pursuit of what would have been a most deserved equaliser. Today
was a true team effort and every player left Queenstown tired but knowing that
they had given their all on the field.
What are your new goals now team?
Cheers

Play-off, Aug 25th:
11th Grade:
Played Aug 21st
Southland Maroon won their first game against Central Otago 3-2.
In their second encounter they faced Otago Gold.
Match tied up to 40 minutes but fatigue finally won the day and the Maroons lost
the encounter 3-0.
Maroon team is made up of a number of kids aged from 9 to 11 years of age.
The younger children are battling above their weight for sure and I feel
confident that we’ve some quality players coming through at this age group.

Played Aug 21st
The Southland U13 team played two games today at Sunnyvale.
We played
Otago
first up and competed very well right throughout the game.
Two very soft tap in goals out of the muddy goal mouth and a lob shot -cross
foiled everyone to see us go down 0-3.
A score line that flattered Otago & we certainly made them sit up & take notice.
Next was South Canterbury.
First half wasn't flash & Southland beaten on the hop by two fast breaks.
Second 30 much better effort & we looked as competitive as Otago game.
We had plenty of great breaks but not the same end results sadly.
Final score 0-3.
Darrin & I were very happy with this first outing, especially after all the
difficulties of cancelled training's.
Things to work on but looks promising if the team unit can develop before
tourney in Queenstown in October.
Grant.
