Premier Boys 2010 Final
WAKATIPU HIGH 6, VERDON COLLEGE 0;

Last season’s beaten finalist Wakatipu High School made amends for that loss when they took out Southland Football’s 2010 Premier boys College League title with a convincing 6-nil win over Verdon College at Turnbull Thompson Park in Invercargill yesterday.

From the outset Wakatipu looked to be the stronger more determined team but were held at bay for 39 of the 40 first half minutes by stubborn Verdon defensive and mid field play.

On the stroke of half time Wakatipu’s Chris Markham netted the first of his two goals for the afternoon with a strong 18 metre drive to give the visitors a 1-nil lead.

Four minutes into the second spell Tom Simon Smith scored with a penalty kick to double the Wakatipu lead to 2-nil.

Three minutes later Verdon was awarded a penalty kick and the opportunity to reduce the deficit.

However Wakatipu keeper Zayn Officer judged the direction of Ryan Jones (not in picture) attempt to perfection and deflected the ball to safety much to the delight of his team mates and travelling supporters.

The next three minutes proved to be vital to the game’s outcome as Sam Speight, Ugur Oskan and Markham all netted goals for Wakatipu to blow the score out to 5-nil and destroy any hope of a Verdon fight back.

Markham’s second goal edged him into first place for the Golden Boot award as the league’s leading goal scorer.

To their credit the less experienced Verdon unit with strong games from senior players Andrew Ridden, Ryan Jones and Kris Leatherby restricted Wakatipu to just one more goal and that came from Joel Pollock as referee Phil Bulling was about to signal time up.

The Reserve league final was taken out by Gore High School 3-1 over Southland Boys High – A.
Tom Robertson gave Boys High the lead 1-nil before goals from Tyson Hodge 2 and Jack Boland sealed Gores win.

James Hargest (Below) won the Junior section convincingly 5-1 against SBHS

2009 College Boys Leagues Update: 20/08/09

Hi All,  we are getting down to the business end of the competition now, with a few teams no longer able to make the finals, and some just hanging in there with a slim chance.

In the Premier League yesterday, Southland Boys High came back from 3 - 1 down to draw with Verdon College 3 all. This was despite them finishing with only nine players, due to injury. James Hargest College have all ready booked themselves a place in the finals for the fourth year in a row, with five wins from five matches. Even though Verdon College and Southland Boys High only have one point, either of them could make the final, although Wakatipu High with six points would be surprised if that was to happen.

The Reserve League with six teams has seen some really interesting results. Wakatipu High have had six wins from six matches, but still are not guaranteed a place in the finals. While Aurora College and James Hargest College can not get enough points to make it, Blue Mountain, Menzies and St Peters College's could all make the finals. The matches between Blue Mountain and Menzies have resulted in the home team winning on each occasion. St Peters drew with Menzies in their first matchup, but this week beat them 6 - 3. Next week St Peters play Blue Mountain. While a loss by either team would not stop them making the final, a win to Blue Mountain College would actually end Menzies chance of making the final, so perhaps Menzies need to be supporting St Peters.

In the Junior League, James Hargest College have 12 points from four matches, the most significant win being 3 - 1 over Wakatipu High. Hopefully Southland Boys High will play Wakatipu High in Invercargill next week, a "must win" match for SBHS.

We are planning for the finals of The Edge College Football League to be played in Invercargill on Wednesday 16th September, details to follow in the next couple of weeks.

Good Luck to all the teams with their remaining matches,

The Edge College Football League 2009

Hi again, Games will start in all three College Leagues next week for some teams. Some of you may be new to College Football, so this email may help answer some common questions.

1. Generally matches are Wednesday afternoon, 3:45 kickoff (assuming the travelling team can be there by then).
2. Duration of each half needs to be agreed by both coaches before the match, taking into consideration the start time and what time low light levels will require the match to finish. Juniors perhaps 30min halves, others up to 45min each way.
3. Each team is to provide a match ball, size 5 for Premier and Reserve Leagues, size 4 for Junior League.
4. ALL players must be wearing shin guards and appropriate footwear.
5. Referees may be available, but often the teams will have to provide a ref for half a game each.
6. Rolling subs are allowed in all Leagues.
7. Draws are allowed.
8. I will endeavour to assist in postponing matches due to weather conditions, so please keep me involved.
9. Results to be emailed to Grant@smithsnz.com - In the Premier League I also need the name of all goal scorers.
10. At least 48hours notice must be given if a team is unable to play, otherwise a default will be awarded to the opposition team. If you are unexpectedly unable to play as drawn, contact me asap, (ph 0274 36 36 55) and I may be able to contact the opposition.
11. Teams in the same League will play each other twice (home & away). The top 2 teams at the end of the competition will play in a Grand Final in September.
12. Junior League is for year 7 or 8 pupils. If a College has more than one team, Juniors may play for any team (more than one team), but other pupils should be in one team or another, and not play for more than one team. Girls are able to play in a boys team to make up numbers.

Note: Eddie Peters is running the Girls College League

Encourage players/supporters to check the draw and follow results at www.southlandfootball.org.nz (look for the Colleges link half way down the left panel), and support the sponsor, The Edge radio station 97.2MHz in Southland.
