Trainings;
Waiting for confirmation was a big problem with lead up work for the
tournament. Football South needs to make
a commitment to this tournament and make it permanent.
Trainings were planned for three Fridays before the tournament at Southland
Football’s training venue Turnbull Thompson Park, which we were able to
complete two of them (first one cancelled as grounds where closed).
Tournament
Game
1 vs Northern (Otago) Result; 0 – 0 Draw
Players started a bit shaky as the pace of the game was faster than they
are used to (for the first 10 mins), but once they settled down they were able
to lift to the required level and match Northern for pace and skill.
In he second half Southland were able to gain equal possession of the
ball with Northern and force a number of corners and shots at the Northern
goal.
Whole team deserves to be mentioned as they played as a team for the
whole game and stuck to the game plan and formation strategies that we put in
place. Also of note was how the new players in the squad (Tayla Henderson,
Kelsay, Keenan, Ella Shields, Jo Taylor), handled themselves and stepped up to
this level.

Game
2; vs Queenstown (Central Otago) Result;
3 – 0 Win
Good start to the game, good moment of the ball around the park keeping
possession and getting good quality shots on goal. First goal came from good
phase of play with ball movement through midfield with pass play out to the
left to Tove Crosswell who cross from Vanessa Hamlin to tap in.
In the second half Southland started the half with good positive play
that kept possession for long periods and were rewarded with Tove Crosswell
scoring from 20 metres out with a shot that beat the keeper placed just inside
the near post. Then towards the end of the game Kate Allison released Jessica
Mallon with opportunity to go one on one with the keeper and slotted it past
the keeper to the right and mad the final score 3 – 0 to Southland.

Game
3; vs Roslyn Wakari (Otago) Result; 1 – 4 loss
Roslyn started the game with confidence and used possession to extract a
couple of shots on the Southland goal that did not trouble Southland Goalkeeper
Andrea Potter in the first 5 minutes. In the sixth minute Roslyn gained
possession of Southland at halfway and release their Right midfield player down
the line and crossed for the Roslyn strikers to score.
After that Southland settled down to play and start to mount a number of
attacks on the Roslyn goal which resulted in two one on ones with the Roslyn
keeper which the Southland strikers failed to finish. Unfortunately instead of
going in at halftime 2 – 1 up Southland Found themselves 0 – 1 down.
In the second half Roslyn again gained possession and scored within the
first 5 minutes of the 2nd half, 2 – 0 Roslyn. Again Southland step
up their play and gained possession a number of times to force corners and
shots on the Roslyn goal. Roslyn came back again and scored from a miss-kick by
one of the Southland defenders and punished them to make the score 3 – 0 to
Roslyn. Southland at this stage fought back and again had their best
opportunities of the 2nd half by again forcing two more one on ones
with the Roslyn Keeper but unfortunately shot wide.
After this period of play Roslyn again scored of a Southland mistake to
make it 4 – 0. But to Southlands credit they never gave up and scored through
midfielder Kate Allison to make the final score 4 – 1 to Roslyn.
This was not a
fair indication of the game, even Roslyn coached agreed, if we had converted
some of the one – on – ones we could have won.
