Not a JHC player in site, but the white round thing is goal three hitting the net...

James Hargest College first soccer X1 capped off a fine 2006 season with a hard fought 3-2 win over archrival Verdon College in the inaugural final of the College Football League at Rugby Park, Invercargill.

The trophy

The game was only 15 seconds old when JHC ace marksman Campbell Edwards stole past the Verdon defenders to deftly head a crossed ball from winger Mark Pearson past the outstretched hands of Verdon keeper Matthew Stanley to give his team a 1-nil lead.

The duel between Campbell Edwards (8) and challenger Tom Kent was intense at times.

Twenty minutes later, after some fascinating football from both teams, it was Edwards again who struck, but this time as provider, when he outsmarted the Verdon defenders and slipped the ball to Mark Pearson to stroke home JHC’s second goal.

Travis Phillips (Right) showing typical aggression.

JHC held the lead to the half time break and the signs looked ominous for Verdon.

However, lead by a courageous captains performance from Tom Kent and strong play from Juan Rudolph and Lyndon Katene Verdon took just 11minutes of the second spell to silence the vocal JHC support base.

First it was Steve MacDonald who side- stepped and rounded the JHC keeper Trent Suddaby to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Then 2 minutes later the normally formidable JHC defence failed to clear a Verdon corner kick away to safety and Stuart Kent made it pay when he drove the equalizing goal in to tie the game up at 2 apiece.

Amazingly, the game already being played at pace stepped up a cog as both teams fought for the winning advantage.

JHC players looking a little worried.

With time almost up and a penalty shootout looming, JHC’s Chris Campbell latched on to a loose ball in the Verdon penalty area and secured his team the win with a blistering volley into the net.

Say "cheese" Ryan

Juniors
Wakatipu High School 5 v James Hargest College 0

Wakatipu High School took the Junior X1 title when it disposed of JHC 5-nil in their final played as the curtain- raiser.

Wakatipu moved the ball around the park with confidence and each goal was a result of well-constructed play.

Chris Markham 2, Owen Arnold, Cohen Nash and Rick Gutzewitz claimed the goals for the victors.
