PERSONALITY PROFILE John Herdman Southland Soccer Development Officer and Southern Fed Director Of Football |
|
Invercargill: |
Different, but in a good way.
Warm Friendly people. Rugby, Stags, Sting, Soccer, Speights A fantastic opportunity to develop youth soccer in an untouched area ready for improvement. |
|
Why coaching v playing ? |
Not good enough to play at the highest level.
Decision made easier with a third ankle injury. Liked coaching, and was impeded by trying to play semi pro and it wasn't worth the hassle. Coaching: Life and soul must go into research, understanding the needs of the game, planning strategies etc. Playing: Life and soul goes into training, practice and developing skill level To do both "well" is too much to ask. |
|
Music: |
Motown, Oasis, Westlife and a little Techno |
|
Sunderland FC: |
Great experience.
Real World stuff that taught me how committed and hard you needed to work to get ahead. Elliot Dickman and Wayne Walls shared their knowledge with me in an environment where the sharing process is not often undertaken. |
|
Durham County: |
Similar to NZ.
Lots of sheep & hills. A great place to grow up as your never far from a football pitch. Favourite son: Brian Robson |
|
Clare: |
A rock, a diamond.
Her open mindedness and understanding allowed this great adventure to happen |
|
NZ Federation Structure: |
Theory is good.
Needs work and the right people can make it happen Interviewer Says..Define "Right Person" A passion for the game, open minded, able to create and accept change. |
|
Food: |
Ahh..Fish Fingers, Mashed Spuds and Baked Beans |
|
Southland Spirit: |
An adventure.
Management great and players have the right attitude to succeed. For me an opportunity to take the team to a higher level. |
|
Newcastle United: |
The best and getting better. |
|
Entertainment: |
Dissecting football games.
A little WWF. Interviewer asks.."What about Sortland Street?" A wry smile..never watch it. |
|
Academy: |
Crucial concept to the progress of soccer in the south.
The platform for players and coaches to improve and for long term coaching development. The improvement in the kids and coaches already is quite exciting. |
|
The Future: |
Focus on Southland and Southern Fed development
initiatives.
A move to Europe (Scandanavia would be nice) and a full time role with a professional club. |
|
TV Tipster: |
Anyone following my tips must be getting poor by now.
Selecting the Premier results is no easy task. Getting the opportunity to slag Terry on air about Tottenham....Priceless. Interviewer says.. "Piss Off" Back to JH, Its the promotion the sport gets thats important and it does that. |
|
Maia Jackman: |
Come on Stu Clares here, can we leave it till later.
I got the chance to watch her play last season, very talented and technically and physically a great role model. NZ must/should be proud of her. I'd like to do an interview..... |
|
Southern Fed Youth Team: |
Great experience.
A super bunch of guys who came back from a 10-3 spanking by Capital to beat Soccer2 up there. You'll need to ask them but from where I sit it was a great journey. |
