2008 ARCHIVES:

Northern 6, Spirit 1; Aug 16th

The much anticipated Southland Finance premier league football clash between AMP South Old Boys and McLellan Motors Queens Park surrendered to the elements at Invercargill’s O’Rorke Park on Saturday afternoon.

A snow flurry, a sudden drop in temperature and the worsening waterlogged pitch forced Referee Dean Seager to abandon the game without a ball being kicked.

It really did snow for a while....

Confirmation of a reschedule date is still to be announced by Southland Football officials but custom and practice suggests it will be played on Saturday August 30th following the completion of the current round of games.

Should that be the case it will be the final game of the competition and unless there’s a major upset in next week’s games it will be the 2008 championship decider.

In persistent rain earlier in the afternoon Tansley Electrical Waihopai grabbed only its second win of the season when it accounted for Appleby Tavern Southend United 4-1 at the same O’Rorke Park venue.

The two teams entertained those who braved the inclement weather with some good quality and even play until midway through the second half when Southend’s Nic Barclay was forced from the field with an injury.

With no substitutes on the bench Southend was reduced to ten players.

At that stage the game was locked up at 1-all through first half goals from Brent deRuyter (Waihopai) and Ian Watson (Southend).

The complexion changed dramatically with Barclay’s absence and in a five minute period Waihopai sealed its deserved win with goals from Matthew McDowell, Mike Smith (penalty) and Chris Jones.

An under-strength and rearranged Spirit FC team proved to be no match for its Dunedin opponent Northern at the Gardens ground in Dunedin going down 6-1 to the team that shares the same position and the same game statistics as Spirit on the Soccersouth premier league points table.

Scottish import Barry Gardiner netted Spirit’s lone goal but it was only a consolation as goals from Northern’s Greg Chitty 3, James Headley, Jason Anson and Tim Smith completed the home team’s onslaught.
