Three contrasting games resulted from the round one Footballsouth Southern Zone Chatham Cup fixtures played on Saturday.
At Bain Park in Invercargill the
Amcal Waikiwi Pharmacy Southend United unit paid little heed to the fact they
have only gained one win from their five Southland Football Premier men’s
competition games as they steam-rolled Eyeview Queens Park 4-nil to cause the
upset of the day.

A section of the large crowd that "for the most" enjoyed
Southend's day in the sun.
I don't plan to press charges against Southend player-coach Iain Walker (extreme
left)
who was seen to assault me with a page from his notebook during an angry
outburst....Stu
At Surrey Park EWL Southland Waihopai was competitive for only sixty of the
ninety minutes played in its game against Footballsouth Premier League
contenders Northern from Dunedin before submitting to a sound 4-1 defeat.
While in Dunedin, the Southland senior men’s Donald Gray cup holder and current
competition leader AMP Old Boys was simply outclassed as Roslyn Wakari hit
double figures with a 10-nil demolition job.
Star of the day was Southend United’s Steve McDonald who capitalised on the good
build up work of his team mates to net a hat trick of goals.
McDonald’s brace of goals at the twenty and twenty five minute mark of the first
half stung their Queens Park opposition who were unable to regain their
composure enough to rectify the damage.

Tom Kent (yellow) played his last game for Park before
heading across the ditch.
Probably wishes his last game was last week

The sending off of Stu Kent
early in the second stanza for his second yellow card offence made Queens Park’s
task an almost impossible one and when Nic Barclay and then McDonald, his third,
increased the Southend score to 4-nil there was no way back for the beleaguered
Park team who earlier in the season had inflicted a 4-1 loss on Saturday’s
victors.

Southend's centre back Steve Garron gave a whole new
meaning to "kicking for touch" as he marshalled
his defensive colleagues to thwart the Park strikers.
For their effort Southend has already laid claim to the Churchill Rosebowl
trophy awarded to the Southland team which progresses furthest in the New
Zealand wide Chatham Cup competition.
Waihopai scored first against Northern in their encounter when a Matty Burgess
corner-kick found its way into the net with just a little help from the Northern
keeper Tom Galloway.

To use a Bob Dylan song title you could say that Northern
keeper Tom Galloway was
"Tangled Up In Blue"
I surprise myself at times....
The teams went to the half time break at 1-apiece after Northern’s Tupac Cordon
had levelled the scores.

Matty won, this shot went high & wide....
Waihopai had the misfortune to lose striker Chris Jones with a serious knee
injury midway through the second half.
The game was delayed for sometime to allow ambulance staff to arrive and remove
Jones from the field.
...
Although accused of gutter photography (with more than a
hint of humour)
I went ahead, in the interest of informing my news hungry public, and took these
pics of the
unfortunate Jonesey receiving lots of TLC and then being removed to the
ambulance.
It's what us Paparazzi do....
Tom McLean, 2, and Cam Higgins completed the visitors scoring ensuring their
progress to the second round.
Roslyn Wakari attacked Old Boys from the outset of their game in Dunedin and
after scoring two early goals, which clearly unsettled Old Boys, continued to
pile on the pressure going to the half time break with a 7-nil margin.
James Govan with 4 goals led the Roslyn onslaught.
Roslyn manager Tony van Gorp was delighted with their first half performance which he rated “the best of the season by a mile”.
Old Boys regrouped somewhat in the second half but for Roslyn the game was over, and their focus went into protecting the defensive clean sheet.
Queenstown Rovers striker Mary Fraser enhanced her leading
goal scorer position in the
Women’s Premier League with a four goal haul in their 11-nil win over Malloch
McClean Waihopai
in Queenstown yesterday.
Queenstown’s domination of the Women’s competition can be measured by Fraser
heading the list
with 28 goals from her team mates Sahara MacDonald, 22, and Leanne Couch 16.
The resort team has a perfect 6 wins from 6 games record.
Goals From Natalie Johnston, 2, Nessa Legg and Leanne Houliston moved East End
Liquor Queens Park
into equal second placing alongside Sinderellas Southend United on the points
table with their 4-1
win over Club Southland Western.
The Queens Park team is enjoying its
most successful season since entering the competition three years ago.
