BIG GAME REVIEWS

Queenstown 4, Spirit 1, July 2nd

Sinderellas Southend United beat Queenstown Health Queenstown Rovers 3-2 in a fast
pulsating premier women’s game at O’Rorke Park yesterday.

And one for Stu...or was it for the the result.

The game quickly developed into a battle of the experienced Southend quartet of
Casey Bryant, Jackie Robertson, Hilary Larson and Tove Crosswell against the speed
and finishing technique of Queenstown’s striking duo Mary Fraser and Sahara MacDonald.

Queenstown's defender thwarts Tove on this occasion

Although Fraser netted the visitors 2 goals it was experience that won the day as good build
up from Southend allowed in-form striker Nicole McMath to net two goals and Crosswell the third
to register the win.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - 2 goal Nicole as she heads goal-ward.

Oh darn (or something) that's 3....

Queenstown lost the services of midfielder Holly Aldred at the 20 minute mark in first half and with
no subs travelling down was forced to play out the game with 10 players.

Exit Holly...we all hope it's not too bad

As a result of the win the teams are now locked together on top of the points table with 30 points
and Southend become the new holder of the Ottley Challenge trophy.

Another Southend heroine (as in famous not the drug) Ali McDonald.
When all else failed she did the job heaps.

Gore Wanderers may have breathed a little more life into Southland Football’s premier men’s Donald Gray cup competition when they beat AMP South Old Boys 3-1 at Hyde Park in Gore on Saturday.

Down 1-nil at the halftime break courtesy of an Old Boys Frank O’Boyle goal the Gore team, currently rock bottom on the points table, ended the 9 game winning run of the league leader with a confident second half display laced with their 3 goals.

1 Old Boys AFC 10 9 0 1 24 12 12 27
6 Gore Wanderers AFC 10 1 1 8 9 17 -8 4

In doing so they helped reduce Old Boys lead in the competition to 8 points over Eyeview Queens Park with a total of 15 points left to play for, and snatched the Larry O’Rorke challenge cup which Old Boys had successfully defended some 29 times in succession.

Wanderer’s reputation as a never-say-die unit despite their low position held up well as Morgan Greene, Diego Tuheke and Cosmin Teodorescu netted the goals that gave them the upset result and an after-match celebration to remember.

In other games Jonny Cox, Nick Edwards and Domnik Katvick ensured Queens Park’s difficult assignment stayed on track as they beat Amcal Waikiwi Pharmacy Southend United 3-nil while a Karl Hawkes penalty for Computer Supplyline Thistle and a goal from Alex Simons for EWL Southland Waihopai meant they shared the points 1-all in their clash.

At the Events Centre in Frankton Queenstown Rovers had their biggest win for some time when they accounted for Kelvin Hotel Spirit FC 4-1 in their Footballsouth premier league game.
......
Such was the quality of football being played I went hunting with my camera and found
a Qantas jet that had flown under the ash-cloud and authorities were trying to hide,
a mountain with zig-zaggy trails of man-made snow, good for base-jumping though,
and a lonely loo that had not found its way to the ravaged Eastern Suburbs of Christchurch.

While the top three teams in the competition, Dunedin Tech, Roslyn and Caversham, battled for last eight places in the New Zealand wide Chatham Cup competition Spirit and Queenstown seventh and eighth at the start of play demonstrated why there is such a gap in class in Footballsouth’s flagship competition with inept displays.

This young team of officials, from left, Stephen Markham, Mike Cowie and Jack Cowie did not deserve the sledging
they got from some Queenstown players...heads up lads.
"Bestie" and a few others would have crucified the locals had they tried it on them.

Played on the newly formed ground

The ground was good

with its rock hard surface and in bright sunshine, the game, one of the more forgettable between the two arch rivals, was marred by too frequent inaccurate passing, unforced possession turnovers and a lack of goal scoring opportunities.

Well then give me someone....was a frequent call to be heard during the afternoon.

Queenstown to their credit with goals from Chris Acott, Steve Henderson, Ross Mackenzie and Oliver James did take what chances came their way and were well worth the three win points that lifted them above Spirit on the points table

Queenstown's good guy, and he is,  Steve (Hendo) Henderson (left) seen here getting rid of the ball from the pursuing
Kris Leatherby.
Minutes later Hendo clattered the young fellow with a fierce late tackle that would have been a straight-red
on any other ground in the world...."oops!! I slipped ref" he said.
Ask the audience on that one Stevie
And then seconds later put Queenstown 2-up...

Oh dear,  I slipped again.....

Craig Ferguson replied with a penalty goal for Spirit.

Heres just an ordinary pic of people getting on with it...
